Delbrook Steve Nash Youth Basketball is a development league that teaches the fundamentals and skills of basketball in a structured and fun environment. Run by a volunteer executive, our Delbrook-area community-based program incorporates local input within the parameters of a sound, well researched, youth sports program. Coaches and organizers are supported through clinics, manuals and access to Basketball BC resources. Our hope is to ‘make kids love basketball’!

Games & Practices
- All Divisions have one 1 hour practice and one 1-1.5 hour game per week
- Practices are Monday to Thursday after 5:00pm
- You will be able to specify your child’s availability at Evaluations
- Games are on either Saturday or Sunday
- Younger children usually play and practice in the earlier time slots
PLEASE NOTE: your child MUST be able to practice in order to play in our league – they may not only attend games.
Teams
- Evaluation ‘Skills & Drills’ sessions are held in the first weeks of September
- All players must attend these sessions
- Players are then placed on ‘Scrimmage Squads’ for a weekend of games
- While these Scrimmage Squads are tentative teams, the League reserves the right to move players from team to team. This is an essential part of the process of balancing teams
- Players, parents and coaches will be expected to cooperate in our attempts to make the most balanced teams possible – it only makes for a better season for everyone!
Friends
The Delbrook Basketball League does not accept requests for kids to be placed on a team with their friends, nor do we create teams based on schools. Our belief is that the more kids they meet over the course of their years with us the better served they will be in their future endeavors, including entering high school. Our experience is that teams bond quickly. And parents, you will find carpooling buddies on your child’s team!
Coaches
If you would like to coach your son/daughter’s team please contact us by mid-August. Coaches are provided with a free coaching clinic and a coaching manual.
Refund Policy
Refunds will be processed, less a $25 administration fee, up to the first league game played for the child’s division. Once the first league game for a division is played no refunds will be given.
Rules and Regulations
Please familiarize yourself and your child with the League’s rules and regulations located on our website.

Steve Nash Youth Basketball is a national youth basketball initiative designed to develop fundamental skills, sportsmanship and a love of the game for basketball. This grassroots program supports and empowers community-based recreational groups and facilities, schools and other institutions across Canada in an effort to positively influence youth through basketball. The goal of the program is to allow participants the opportunity to maximize their potential, while promoting the importance of youth basketball as a vehicle to build character, discipline and self-esteem.
The model for Steve Nash Youth Basketball was established after extensive research of existing community basketball programs from across North America and follows the guidelines of Sport Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD). The program is flexible in nature to allow local organizers to adapt the program and implement it in their community while following its principles and philosophies.
Our Vision: To create opportunities across Canada for all children and youth aged 5-13 to: • Participate in basketball, • Learn and play basketball, using qualified coaching and programming, • Learn to compete in a supportive and development-focused environment, • Improve the Health of the Nation and Develop the Game.
With each program, participants will have an opportunity to learn both basketball lessons and drills dedicated to conditioning and skill development as well as recreational play and life skills.

“Make kids love basketball!”
|

“Our league philosophy, coaching mandates and the rules that govern play are all developed with this in mind.”
¨ Delbrook Steve Nash Youth Basketball is a developmental league.
¨ Every attempt is made at the beginning of the season to form balanced teams in the hopes that all games will be close and competitive
¨ It is a league where all players are treated equally and FUN is the name of the game.
¨ Players should be encouraged to take risks, to push themselves outside of their comfort zone and not be afraid to make mistakes.
¨ While games are competitive at all age levels, respect for the other team and enjoyment for all players should be the number one priority of the coaches.
¨ Coaches are encouraged to focus on fundamentals and allow kids to play all positions – the tall kid playing only post positions in grade 6/7 could end up needing the skills to play guard in grade 8/9.
¨ Set plays and complicated offenses are not suggested; teaching kids to think while they’re playing is encouraged.
¨ Most importantly, ALL kids deserve equal attention – unskilled players can be taught to be full contributors while skilled players can be made into play-makers, passers and leaders.
